The Balblair Highland Cows are resident year round in the field adjacent to West and East Lodges - if you're looking to get up close with these beautiful creatures, Balblair is possibly the best place to do this in the Highlands. You'll get to know their individual characters and personalities, and you are welcome to offer them some fruit or veg - they love an apple! They are  normally very friendly and usually more than willing to pose for a photo!

Currently, our resident cows include: "Pet" "Pat" "Peg" & "Pop".

As of time of writing this (January 2026) Peg and Pop are the youngest, born late December 2023 and are visibly younger in the photos below.

Highland cows are very slow growing compared to other breeds, which is why, commercially, they are quite niche today. However, they are very hardy and never need, or want, to come inside in the winter. They appear to be heavy and cumbersome, but don't let that fool you, they are really very athletic if they want to be!
